Three days for small animal veterinarians.

On Thursday and Friday, five small groups work in parallel across the Baroque chateau in Luka nad Jihlavou. Everyone meets for Saturday’s lectures before the veterinary music and food festival begins in the park.

Each workshop runs Thursday 13:00–18:00 and Friday 09:30–17:00. Group size is limited so there is room for practical work and discussion.

Ultrasound Workshop: Basic

  • Obtaining diagnostic quality images: settings, frequency, gas, obesity and probe selection.
  • Common normal variants: echogenicity, texture and contours. The “big five” organs: liver and gallbladder, spleen, kidneys, bladder and stomach.
  • Practical gastrointestinal ultrasound: pylorus, duodenum and ileum, wall layers and motility; inflammation, obstruction and infiltration.
  • Interpreting cases, distinguishing artefacts and writing reports.

Ultrasound Workshop: Advanced

  • Difficult structures: pancreas, adrenal glands, pylorus, cardia, ileocolic junction and deep lymph nodes; techniques for obese patients.
  • Advanced gastrointestinal, pancreatic and adrenal interpretation: focal and diffuse changes, loss of wall layers, infiltration, pancreatitis, insulinoma and hyperadrenocorticism.
  • Abdominal vessels and Doppler: aorta, caudal vena cava, portal system, renal and hepatic vessels; flow, portosystemic shunts, thrombosis, congestion and lesion vascularity.
  • Interventional ultrasound: indications, FNA and core biopsies, ultrasound-guided fluid sampling and drainage, safe needle paths and managing complications.

Ophthalmology Workshop

  • Diabetic cataracts from early changes to severe disease and cataract complications.
  • Comprehensive ophthalmic examination of the diabetic patient.
  • Retina and fundus: microaneurysms, intraretinal haemorrhages and vascular changes.
  • Cornea and ocular surface in the diabetic patient: reduced corneal sensitivity, impaired healing, dry eye, corneal oedema and lipid keratopathy.

Emergency and Urgent Care Workshop

  • Primary stabilisation and triage: oxygen therapy, rapid decision-making and prioritisation in shock and collapse.
  • Fluid and insulin therapy: infusion planning and pump operation, correction of hypoglycaemia, hypokalaemia and dehydration in diabetic patients.
  • Intensive monitoring: ECG setup, pulse oximetry, capnography, blood pressure, urine output and regular glucose and electrolyte checks; oxygenation in emergency medicine and nasal oxygen therapy techniques.
  • Acute respiratory and circulatory failure and cardiopulmonary resuscitation: oxygen therapy, intubation, manual ventilation, chest compressions, ETCO₂ monitoring and treatment of reversible causes, including hypoglycaemia and severe metabolic disorders.
  • Simulation of a critically ill diabetic patient – from admission, vascular access and initiation of treatment to management of hypotension, arrhythmia, hypokalaemia, persistent ketosis or a sudden drop in blood glucose.
  • Venous and central catheterisation, nasogastric and nasoesophageal tubes, abdominocentesis and peritoneal lavage, intraosseous access, intrathoracic drainage, oesophagostomy tube placement, endotracheal intubation and tracheostomy, pericardiocentesis, jugular and central venous catheterisation, and venous cutdown.

Endocrinology and Diabetology Seminar

  • Diagnosis, individualised treatment and monitoring of diabetes.
  • Updates in insulin therapy. Monitoring and managing problems during SGLT2 inhibitor treatment.
  • Use of continuous glucose monitoring systems. Remission, hypoglycaemia, diabetic ketoacidosis and the acute diabetic patient.
  • Comorbidities and complications of diabetes. Hypersomatotropism and acromegaly in diabetic cats.
  • Approaches to pancreatitis, obesity and urinary tract infections in diabetic cats. Feline hypertension.
  • Assessment of hyperthyroidism, radioiodine therapy and the use of scintigraphy. Correct interpretation of T4, fT4 and TSH in hyperthyroidism and canine hypothyroidism. Conn’s syndrome as a commonly overlooked endocrinopathy.
  • Evaluation and selection of tests for Cushing’s syndrome, and safe recognition and stabilisation of patients in Addisonian crisis.
  • An endocrine mini-laboratory in veterinary practice.

Rational antimicrobial therapy in horses: Clinical cases in practice

Practical insight into antimicrobial stewardship in equine medicine. On real clinical case studies, selecting active substances and evaluating treatment options. Focus on protocols that minimise resistance while ensuring maximum therapeutic efficacy. Decision-making confidence and open discussion on challenging practice cases.

Equine clinical pathology: Interactive case management

Interpretation of laboratory findings in horses as highly complex, where isolated values can easily lead to incorrect conclusions. On routine and challenging cases, systematic linking of haematology, biochemistry and body fluids with the clinical picture. Learn to uncover diagnostic pitfalls and non-specific reactions that often mask actual pathology, gaining a structured approach where lab data directly determines patient prognosis and treatment.

Workshop topics and timing may be adjusted slightly to participants’ needs to maximise interactivity and benefit.

Practical equine emergency care

What will the workshop give you? No dull handouts. You will practise everything on training models or directly with equine patients:

  • Triage under pressure: Measuring vital signs and listening to the abdomen with a stethoscope (healthy gut sounds vs. ominous silence).
  • Restraint & low-stress handling: Safely restraining a panicking or aggressive horse and calming a horse frightened by the sound of a hammer or by pressure.
  • Field assistance: Assisting with catheter placement, nasogastric intubation and the basics of administering fluids in the stable by headlamp.
  • Emergency bandaging: Crisis tendon bandages, hoof wraps and the legendary duct-tape boot that stays on even in mud.
  • Shoe removal and rasping: Timed shoe removal from hoof models and practising the correct rasping technique to round the hoof wall (mustang roll).

  1. 1. lectureLacerations & massive bleeding: Rapid improvisation and effective pressure bandages using what is at hand. Basic anatomy for owners and preparation of a sterile field for nurses.
  2. 2. lectureCellulitis & the oesophagus: Early recognition of cellulitis rather than an ordinary bite, and an emergency protocol when feed comes out of the nostrils to prevent fatal choking.
  3. 3. lectureColic from A to Z: Reading subtle signs hours in advance, listening to the abdomen with a stethoscope, settling the “walk or not?” debate and preparing for transport or fluid therapy.
  4. 4. lectureHoof emergencies: Managing the onset of laminitis, locating an abscess with hoof testers and why the hoof axis matters to a horse’s life.
  5. 5. lectureFarriery first aid: Removing nail clinches and safely taking off a loose shoe before the horse punctures its sole, and rounding a chipped hoof with a rasp.

For two-day small animal workshops, select this option during registration if you will not attend Saturday’s lectures or the closing festival. The package price will decrease by CZK 3,500 excluding VAT. Equine programmes have separate Friday-only and Saturday-only options.

Your place on the chosen workshop is definitively secured once payment is received. The organiser cannot reassign a confirmed seat to anyone else.

100% refund up to 20 days before the event

No need to hesitate with early payment. If your plans change and you cancel at least 20 calendar days before the conference, we return 100% of the fee. (60% refunded if cancelled later).

Free transfer to a colleague

If you cannot attend even at the last minute, you can easily transfer your registration to another veterinarian or practice colleague prior to the event.
